The Byre Holiday Cottage is in the perfect location…

One of the best things about staying here? You’re in a peaceful area, that’s great for the kids and dogs - but, you’re also near to wonderful villages, glorious walks and exciting attractions. Situated on the outskirts of Cartmel and just on the edge of the Lake District - you’re simply spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding on where to visit.

Things To Do In Cartmel…

The Byre Cottage to Cartmel Village: 5-minute drive or a 30/45 minute walk (just over 2 miles away)

When visiting, we highly-recommend a visit to the local village of Cartmel - known for its tasty Sticky Toffee Pudding, Racecourse and wonderful architecture.

Visitor Attractions

This charming village has a lot to offer, including the famous Cartmel Racecourse - which hosts meetings every year.

Not only that, but when strolling through the village, you’ll come across several heritage-rich buildings - such as the striking 12th Century Cartmel Priory, as well as a small Heritage Centre which contains information about the history of the local area.

Eat & Drink Out

Whether you’re looking for an indulgent 5-course meal, a delicious Sunday Roast with all the trimmings or a nice glass of wine and pint of local ale - you’ll be able to find it in Cartmel Village.

Home to several brilliant restaurants and pubs, including the Michelin Starred “L’Enclume” - Cartmel is the perfect place for a relaxing trip out. And what’s more? Because of the small size of the village, it won’t take you long to hop from one pub to the next…

Shop Local

If you’re a lover of local food produce, you’ll be spoilt for choice when visiting Cartmel Village.

You will find the famous Sticky-Toffee Pudding shop, which is home to many wonderful local delicacies - and just through the square you will find Cartmel Cheeses.

And if you fancy bit of retail therapy, you will find a small selection of local homeware, gift and vintage shops all within close proximity.

One of the many reasons our guests love staying at The Byre Cottage is thanks to the picturesque location, which is just a stones’ throw from some stunning landscapes and local attractions. It’s impossible to get bored of the views on offer…

Hampsfell

No driving required

This route is accessible via foot from the Byre Cottage and it’s one we recommend.

At the top, you will find the Hampsfell Hospice, which was built by the Vicar of Cartmel in 1846. When you reach the hospice, you will be able to take in the magnificent views, which includes breathtaking of the Old Man of Coniston, Helvelyn, the Langdales and Morecambe Bay.

Field Broughton to Cartmel

No driving required

Walk out the front door of the Byre Cottage and embark on the stunning walk from Field Broughton to Cartmel, at your own pace. We usually advise this taking around 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

Gummer’s Howe

15 minute drive & a small fee for the car park

If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenging walk, then Gummer’s Howe is close by. Get to the top and the views up Lake Windermere are magnificent. If you’ve built up an appetite after your walk, we highly recommended the Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank (it’s about a 10 minute drive from Gummer’s Howe)

If you fancy a trip out - we recommend visiting some of the glorious towns and villages of the Lake District. Bustling with local pubs, cafes and gift shops - these idyllic places will give you an insight into local life, as well as the beautiful scenery which can be captured all around.
